Changing pain and movement behaviour in chronic low back pain
Kieran O'Sullivan will give a course about chronic low back pain. He is one of the international researchers who worked intensively together with Peter O’Sullivan to develop the ‘Cognitive Functional Therapy’ (CFT) intervention. CFT is an approach to the management of pain disorders that considers factors across the biopsychosocial spectrum that contribute to the development and maintenance of a pain disorder.

It provides a logical framework allowing skilled clinicians both diagnose, triage and target management where appropriate. CFT integrates cognitive strategies and functional rehabilitation to change provocative movement and cognitive behaviours that provoke and maintain pain.
This approach has been developed through a combination of synthesis of contemporary scientific literature and a body of original research led by Prof Peter O’Sullivan and a collaborative team of international researchers. There is emerging evidence that the CFT approach provide better clinical outcomes than current best clinical practice in the management of non-specific chronic spinal pain.
This unique 2 day workshop outlines Peter O Sullivan’s classification model for the assessment and management of complex back pain disorders. The workshop is dynamic, interactive and practical. It includes patient videos, clinical reasoning and equips physiotherapists to develop skills in diagnostics as well as the design of CFT interventions for specific disorder. Be prepared to change your beliefs about back pain if you sign up for this workshop.
The course will be runned by Zoom. Before the course we will send you some preperation to do (approx. 6-8 hours). On 11th of May 2 hour live intro (19.00u - 21.00u) and on 19th of May 4 hours live with live patient (13.00u - 17.00u)
Course objectives
- Overview of the back pain diagnosis, the evidence and management dilemma
- Potential multidimensional underlying mechanisms to pain
- Overview of the clinical reasoning framework of low back pain disorders
- Develop the communication skills acquired to deal with complex pain problems
- Develop competency in designing the cognitive component to the motor learning interventions

Review of participants:
"Previous participants rates this course 8/10!"
"For not one moment I was getting bored while watching the online course on my screen, although I was a little hesitant about this on before hand. Kieran inspired me, especially when he showed his communication skills while treating a chronic low back pain patient who joined the online-session."
"A perfect balance between preperation material, online learning and casuistry."
